How to handle your money in your medical vacation.
April 4, 2019This time I will share with you this piece of information about currency exchange in Mexico. It is important to know that Mexicans love their pesos and therefore are not as open to receiving American dollars when you make purchases from them. So, my advice for you is to exchange some of the cash you are carrying when possible. You can always do it at the airport, but the exchange rate is always higher. So, my recommendation would be to go to the reception at your hotel and ask them for a small amount of pesos for taxis and small purchases and also ask them for the name and location of local bank that exchanges American dollars for Mexican pesos. I can only think about a local bank called Santander and another place called Elektra, but your hotel receptionist will know if their local location makes exchanges. So please ask there. It is better to walk around with Mexican pesos wherever you go in Mexico.
Costa Rica is a different thing, you do not need to worry about this because they take dollars everywhere. Just make sure you carry small bills, since they will not take $50 or $100 dollar bills everywhere. This happened to one of the ladies I met from Houston Texas who went to the hairdresser to get her hair done 4 days after her surgery and could not pay them because she had a $100 bill. Then, she had to pay with her credit card and was hit with that extra 4% merchant’s fee they add for credit cards.
Well, I hope my information is helpful to you guys thinking about traveling to Costa Rica or Mexico for medical, plastic surgery or dental procedures.
